The Dyschord EP

Moon Child

Republic Music
REP015 | 2015-06-22
If you're feeling like tech house has jumped the shark; if you're tired of the same boring filters and the same cynical breakdowns that have been cluttering up the dancefloors of the world lately; but you still believe in the possibilities of house fused with electronic soul - then Republic's 15th release is for you. These four
highly musical, emotion-drenched deep-tech compositions from veteran California producer Moonchild (Lucas Rodenbush, better known to discerning househeads as E.B.E.) will feel like a cool breeze on a bright sunny morning. Here at Republic we've been fans of E.B.E.'s brilliant analog-driven tech-funk for years, and we're beyond excited to have him join our roster for an extra-special EP that gets right to the heart of what our sound is all about.

"Dyschord" The title track is anything but discordant; it's an achingly melodic and just gorgeous piece of techno soul that you'll never get out of your head. The beautiful thing about it is that, like the best electronic music, despite its minimalism it's a real song - its driving, melancholy bassline, layers of Kraftwerkian synths and little jazzy breakdowns keep going different places with each unfolding measure. It tells a story.

The evocative titles of the other tracks speak volumes about the deep and tranquil mood of this release.

"The Calm" rides subtle tribal percussion and funky snares on the way to an aerodynamic electro-jazzy sound that'll remind you of the master Larry Heard himself.

"Remembrance" is a tougher and more uptempo Detroit-style workout with whirling layers of syncopated keys and synth stabs delicious enough to eat.

"Dawn" has the funkiest groove on the EP, featuring the nastiest high-hats you'll hear all year, but soon its lush strings and lovely piano riffs take you to a higher place. Forget genre labels, it's just smart, complex and beautiful deep house done well.

That's the point of any good techno-house or deep-tech or whatever you want to call it: at the end of the day if it's made in the right spirit it's all on a continuum with the true-school sound of house music. Moonchild's Dyschord EP embodies that spirit as well as any release this year.
